Celebrate Volunteerism Conference
Arts and Health
Volunteering for the Health of It
Saturday February 21, 2009

Our 5th Annual Conference for volunteers in Vancouver and the lower mainland takes place in the same fabulous venue - the Vancouver Museum - with a line-up of inspiring, experienced and exciting speakers, round table hosts and panelists. The theme this year looks at the connection between the arts and health. We have an inclusive perspective on art - music, opera, theatre, visual - and embrace the World Health Definition of Health - physical, mental and social well-being and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity.

Nancy Cooley, in her keynote address, will give us an overview of some of the research findings, latest developments and scope of arts, health and healing. She is continuing the work she started in 2004 - updating research findings and establishing a network. See
www.bcartscouncil.ca/healthcanadaforum/ for her 2004 background paper and subsequent national forum.

The Round Tables will feature people involved in art therapy, community healing, establishing the Health Arts Society in BC and art in the downtown eastside.

After a wonderful celebratory lunch, we will be treated to a stimulating panel discussion moderated by Bramwell Tovey, Music Director, Vancouver Symphony Orchestra. Panelists include David Lemon, Executive Director, Health Arts Society
www.healtharts.org Valerie Weeks, one of Canada's outstanding harpsicordists and Music Therapist in Palliative Care, and Deb Pound, Bard on the Beach Volunteer of the Year. Stay tuned for a surprise 4th panelist!

 Your "On Stage" planning partners:
Bard on the Beach Shakespeare Festival, Museum of Anthropology,
MusicFest Vancouver (Festival Vancouver), Science World at TELUS World of Science,
Vancouver Art Gallery, Vancouver Museum, Vancouver Opera,
Vancouver Opera Guild, Vancouver Symphony.
